Cockroaches are nocturnal and usually hide in dark warm places around homes such as cracksm crevices and behind large household appliances. Cockroaches have the ability to carry disease producing organism such as dysentery, diarrhoea and salmonella. Ants (Internal)

Ants live in nest colonies that range in size from a few to hundreds of thousands. They are foragers and will eat a large variety of foods such as sweets, grease, oils, vegetables, honeydew and other insects. They carry their food back to the nest where they feed the queen, the lava and themselves. The two most common type of ants on the Gold Coast and Tweed are:

  • The Black Ant - These ants nest in doors, behind wall paper, in ceilings and between walls. They prefer sweeter foods such as honey, sugar and cakes. They are most commonly found in kitchens, toilets and bathrooms as they need moisture
  • The Coastal Brown Ant - Theses ants nest mainly in soil, gardens and under bark and stones. They prefer more savoury foods such as seeds, meats, oils and dead insects

Spiders

Spiders feed on insects and while they will not normally attack humans, some species may bite if provoked. If this occurs you should try to capture or identify the spider and then seek medical advice. Spiders can be divided into two main groups:

  • Crawling Spiders - These spiders are most commonly found under stones, logs, wood piles, in brick and stone wall cavities, in sheds and out houses, machinery and low foliage
  • Webbing Spiders - These spiders most commonly spin their webs around windows, guttering, architraves, corners, curtains, railings and light fixtures

Fleas

Fleas are small parasitic blood sucking insects that feed on mammals such as humans, dogs, cats, pigs and birds. They prefer warm, humid conditions and are most commonly known for biting which can cause mild to sever irritation and they have the ability to transmit disease. The four most common fleas species are:

  • The Cat Flea
  • The Dog Flea
  • The Human flea
  • The Oriental Rat Flea

Carpet Pests

Rodents (rats and/or mice)

Rodents live groups, in nests constructed of soft materials such as paper, fabrics and insulation. They are most commonly found in wall voids, roof voids, under floors and in stored foods. They are scavengers, so where they nest is determined by their access to food and water. They can pose a serious health problem to humans because of their ability to transmit diseases by a variety of means. The most commonly occurring rodents are:

  • The Norway Rat
  • The Roof Rat
  • The House Mouse

Bird Mites (bird lice)

Bird Mites and Lice are external parasites that live on birds such as Sparrows, Starlings, Indian Mynas and Pigeons. Infestation usually occurs in homes once the young have left the nest and these parasites need to find a new food source.

Paper Lice

Booklice are small scavenger insects that feed on the microscopic moulds that grow on materials such as paper, leather, straw, carpet and certain stored foods. They are most commonly found in damp, dark, undisturbed areas.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are bloodsucking insects that are capable of transmitting certain diseases to humans and animals. They can breed in any fresh or salt water, which remains stagnant for longer than 5 days, this includes containers, drains, ponds, pools, dams and tide-affected land.

Biting Midge

Biting Midges, commonly known as sandflies, are associated with habitats such as coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangrove swamps and tidal flats. The biting activity of adult biting midges is mainly limited to the periods of dawn and dusk. Only female midges feed on blood and may attack humans in large numbers, biting on any areas of exposed skin, often on the face, scalp and hands.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are blood sucking insects usually found in a variety of dark locations including under mattresses, floorboards, paintings and carpets, behind skirting, in various cracks and crevices of walls, within bed frames and other furniture, and behind loose wallpaper. Bed bugs tend to stay in close contact with each other and heavy infestations are accompanied by a distinctive sweet sickly smell. Blood spotting on mattresses and nearby furnishings is often a tell tale sign of an infestation. Bed bugs are transported via luggage, clothing, bedding and furniture.
